We use a flat nozzle so the water spreads out across the boards instead of drilling into them. A turbo nozzle concentrates the whole of that force into one rotating point, and on softwood decking that is what lifts the grain, splinters the surface and breaks the timber up.
Algae is what makes decking slippery, and it is not only a summer problem. Through the winter the growth stays wet for weeks at a time and then ices over the top, and an algae-covered board with frost on it is about the most dangerous surface in a garden. Taking the growth off is the part that fixes it.
Once the deck is clean and dry we coat it with a rich teak oil, and that is the part that keeps moisture out of the timber. Bare wood drinks water in, then swells, splits and eventually rots, taking the fixings and the frame underneath with it. Oiling costs a fraction of replacing a deck, which is why we think it is very important.
Dry debris is swept off, plants are protected by soaking them with water, and the condition of the timber is assessed before anything else happens.
Low-pressure fan nozzles are used, always following the grain of the wood, to lift slippery grime and algae away without splintering or damaging the fibres. A professional-grade biocide then goes on and stays active, killing the spores you cannot see and slowing regrowth.
Once the boards are completely dry the deck is coated with a rich teak oil. It nourishes the timber, locks moisture out and guards against rot — and it brings the colour of the wood back up at the same time.
